La inteligencia artificial ha tenido un impacto enorme en la sociedad, hasta el punto de que incluso el hogar está ahora gestionado por tecnología basada en IA. Sin embargo, los avances tecnológicos propiciados por la IA no están disponibles en igual medida para todos. La desigualdad de ingresos ha creado una situación en la que el hogar existe funcional y tecnológicamente en diferentes siglos, según los recursos disponibles. Mientras que los hogares adinerados habitan cada vez más viviendas inteligentes impulsadas por IA que reducen la carga cognitiva y amplían el tiempo de ocio, miles de millones de personas en el mundo carecen todavía de la infraestructura básica del siglo XX. A partir de los datos del proyecto Gapminder Dollar Street y de la literatura existente sobre difusión tecnológica, adopción de hogares inteligentes y carga cognitiva, este artículo traza tres niveles de vida doméstica —el hogar del siglo XXI, el hogar del siglo XX y el hogar premoderno— y sostiene que la casa en la que vive una familia determina no solo su comodidad, sino su momento histórico efectivo. Se analizan las implicaciones para las políticas públicas.

Artificial intelligence has had a profound impact on society, to the extent that even the home is now increasingly managed by AI-based technologies. However, the technological advances enabled by AI are not equally accessible to everyone. Income inequality has created a situation in which households function both technologically and practically in different centuries, depending on the resources available. While affluent households increasingly inhabit AI-powered smart homes that reduce cognitive load and expand leisure time, billions of people around the world still lack the basic infrastructure characteristic of the twentieth century. Drawing on data from the Gapminder Dollar Street project and the existing literature on technological diffusion, smart home adoption, and cognitive load, this article identifies three levels of domestic living—the twenty-first-century home, the twentieth-century home, and the premodern home—and argues that the type of home in which a family lives determines not only its level of comfort but also its effective historical moment. The article concludes by examining the implications of these findings for public policy.
